The workers from Yucheng Shoe Factory in Dongguan City were protesting against new management policies. These include huge bonus cuts, restrictions placed on the number of toilet visits, and the dismissal of 18 middle management staff due to a drastic decrease in orders. The strike continued for two hours. Dozens of protesters sustained head injuries after being beaten by riot police. Workers resumed their work after negotiating with the company. A gloomy world economy coupled with higher wages and a progressively competitive business environment has caused the company to incur heavy losses—and to impose the new regulations. But workers are feeling the pinch in their wallets. Their basic monthly pay is about 170 dollars. With extra work, they can earn up to 300 dollars a month. Without the extra work and bonuses, they could barely make ends meet. Yucheng Shoe Factory makes shoes for New Balance. It's a subsidiary of Pou Chen Group, which produces some of the world's famous sports brands, such as Nike, Adidas and Reebok. Reuters reported a sharp decrease in exports is affecting many factories in Guangdong Province. It's jeopardizing the jobs of hundreds of thousands of workers. The tough times have caused many factories to go broke. This year about 450 foreign companies closed in Dongguan. Others are planning to move to central and western China to take advantage of cheaper labor.

Over the weekend, hundreds of farmers in southern China's Guangdong Province kept protesting land seizures by local authorities. There were violent clashes in the city of Lufeng earlier last week. Protestors had attacked government buildings and a police station after riot police had allegedly beat up protestors. Villagers in Wukan also vowed to keep protesting until authorities return farmland that had been sold to developers. On Saturday, no new cases of violence were reported, but villagers are adamant to not let the issue rest. [Wukan Villager]: "We want them to return all our land because if we don't have the roots of our farmland, we have nothing to eat. Only with justice, they must give us justice because with justice people have rice to eat." In Longguang, villagers rented three earthmovers on Friday, smashing down a wall that had surrounded a plot of farmland that had been seized four years ago. [Li Muxia, Longguang Villager]: "When we tore down the wall yesterday we were very happy. Everyone was very happy. But even though we were happy we also feel concerned. We're also afraid the government officials won't return the land to us." Land grabs are common in China, and often result from the collusion of private companies and local officials. Farmers kicked off of their land are often reimbursed far below the market rate or they are re-settled in cities where there's way to make a living.

The suspect, who came from the mainland on a two-way travel permit, was about to collect “ransom” from a 69-year-old Hong Kong man. Police said there were at least 20 other such cases, in which members of the mainland-based syndicate would make random calls – telling whoever picked up the phone that a family member had been kidnapped. Victims, ranging from 56 to 87 years old, were then told to transfer an amount of money to a mainland bank account or hand it over in person, in return for their loved ones’ release. The largest sum involved, in one case, was more than 200,000 dollars. Police say since the syndicate was formed last May, the group had fleeced victims of a total of some 1.94 million dollars. Officers also say the ring was behind 95 percent of such frauds recorded in the city during the period. Officers in Guangdong have nabbed the ring’s leaders. Police say their cross-border operation with mainland law enforcement is ongoing and more could be arrested.

First stop, Shenzhen. Incoming Communist Party chief Xi Jinping is in Guangdong province. And the trip to southern China is making a statement—a statement that some say is two decades old. [Zhang Tianliang, NTD Senior China Analyst] "Xi's visit to Guangdong is to publicize his reform image, like what Deng Xioaping's 'southern tour' did in 1992. It kicked started China's 'lame duck reform'—that is, an economic reform without political change." Xi Jinping's tour of Guangdong province is his first trip as the new leader of the Communist Party. The similarities to former leader Deng Xiaoping's "southern tour" twenty years ago are hard to miss. From the understated coach Xi travelled in, to this tree planting ceremony. Like Deng's trip, Xi Jinping's comes at a time when the Communist Party is faced with prickly political and social challenges. Deng's answer was full blast economic reform and opening up. But with one condition. The Communist Party was to stay the supreme ruler. But former professor at George Mason University, Zhang Tianliang, says that road was what led to the current situation: a political system that's grossly inadequate to deal with the changes that economic reform has brought. [Zhang Tianliang, NTD Senior China Analyst] "This road can't go on. Everyone can see clearly now that if Xi continues Deng Xiaoping's path, it'll be another dead end." On Monday, state-run CCTV reports that Xi Jinping told Guangdong's entrepreneurs and government officials that there are new economic challenges ahead. Xi also said reform must be deepened for China's market economy. Democracy advocate Wang Beiling, now living in exile in the US, says the Communist regime is dancing to its own tune. [Wang Beiling, Democracy Advocate] "The Communist Party is stuck in its own delusion. It wants to be politically conservative, but push the economy to maintain power. That's just what it hopes for, and it's dancing with shackles on." The coastal Guangdong province has been at the forefront of economic development under the Chinese regime. Xi Jinping's father, Xi Zhongxu, was the provincial governor between the late 1970s to early 1980s. During his term, he influenced Deng Xiaoping to allow the region greater economic liberalization.
